Hello everyone! We’re continuing with our Christian author interviews, and today we’re welcoming author Krislyn Lyon ! Krislyn is a fellow Christian writer here on Substack, and the author of “For The Sake Of Ten Men”, a Bibical historical fiction retelling of Sodom and Gomorrah. I definitely recommend checking out and subscribing to her Substack!
1. First off, tell me a bit about yourself and your writing journey. What has influenced your writing the most in your life? Was there a time in your life when you knew you wanted to become an author? What do you enjoy writing about?
I was always writing ditties as a child. I did young authors’ conferences, and I loved poetry. I took the class AP Language in high school. It was brutal, but I had an amazing teacher, Drew Kemp, now retired. He didn’t let me get away with anything, and as far as I’m concerned he taught me everything I needed to know about writing well.
I always wanted to write novels, but lacked the discipline until the last few years. Now that I can finish projects, I pretty much want to try a little of everything and just have fun with it. I enjoy creating oddball characters. I prefer writing fantasy, because if I don’t know how something works, I can just make it up.
2. How have you found that being a Christian has impacted your writing? What had being a Christian taught you most about writing?
Yes. I always considered my writing to be a gift from God. Once I got out of my head and into my heart, it flowed a lot better. For my novel, I asked God what he would change during my final edit, and He gave me some great ideas I never would’ve considered otherwise.
I consider that every book I write is one God gave me to write. So I need to keep that in mind and steward the gift well, being true to myself as He’s created me, and true to Him.
3. Do you have any hobbies outside of writing? What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I used to paint, play violin, and study foreign language. Now, I have toddlers
4. If you could only have one book (or series) to read for the rest of your life, what book(s) would you choose and why?
Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game series. Deep, impressive works. Total love.
5. What writing projects are you currently working on?
I just published my debut novel, For The Sake Of Ten Men, which is a gritty retelling of Sodom and Gomorrah. It’s getting rave reviews, and I am deeply humbled. I’m also expanding my repertoire. I’m about to publish a romance novella that is funny and cozy: Love In The Age Of Memes.
6. Do you have any advice for aspiring Christian writers?
Work on your confidence. I see a lot of Christian writers putting out devotionals—the devotional market must be flooded! If you have a book in you, don’t be afraid to write it! Let God help you!
7. What is your favorite time of day and place to write? What general atmosphere do you enjoy writing in?
At night, when it’s quite and my kids are asleep. Alone at last! And then I type my fingers off lol.
8. What books are currently on your TBR?
I’m ARC and beta reading a variety of books, from mystery to romance. On my TBR is anything with good writing. I love discovering new talented writers.
9. If you could recommend only three books to anyone, what three books would they be and why?
Ender’s Game, The Hitchhiker’s Guide, and Myst. All masterpieces in their own right—storytelling, creativity, and worldbuilding.
10. What is your favorite genre to read and write in? Why?
To read, sci-fi. To write, fantasy. I hate researching books, so I make all the settings fantasy. That way, why I don’t know how something works, I just make it up. You can’t say it doesn’t work that way—it’s make-believe!
